Heartburn   (a burning sensation in the esophagus or upper abdomen which may be accompanied by burping, sour stomach or bitter taste in the mouth)


  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, cool sweaty skin, change in color or mental state
  • Chest pain that is crushing, stabbing or tight
  • Vomiting bright red blood or coffee ground fluid
  • Bloody or black tarry stools
  • Previous history of heart attack

  • Heartburn is caused by a back up of stomach acids or increased acid production
  • Smoking, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, peppermint, citrus, tomatoes or fatty, fried foods aggravate heartburn
  • If heartburn is chronic, sleep on several pillows or elevate the head of the bed on 4-inch blocks
  • Individuals with a history of asthma emphysema, congestive heart failure high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney, thyroid diseases or other chronic disease should contact their Health Care Provider before taking any over the counter (OTC) medication

    • Loosen tight clothing
    • Stay upright after eating; do not lie flat or eat late
    • Eat small frequent meals
    • Take over the counter (OTC) antacids (Maalox, Mylanta)
    • Try over the counter (OTC) acid reducing medication (Tagamet, Pepcid) to decrease acid production
    • Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medication (Advil, Nuprin, Aleve)
